Dietary management of polycystic ovary syndrome in women planning for pregnancy.

When planning for pregnancy, every woman is recommended to be increasingly aware of a healthy lifestyle with a well-balanced and varied diet rich in minerals and vitamins.

Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) should be aware of their specific nutritional needs. As a consequence of elevated levels of male hormones, they often suffer from disorders of oocyte maturation associated with irregular or lacking menstrual bleeding. Insulin resistance occurs frequently as well.

In insulin resistance, the blood sugar hormone insulin produced by the pancreas does not have a sufficient effect on the receptors of the sugar-processing tissues. To compensate for this, the pancreas in turn releases more insulin, so that there is an excess of insulin as a result.

Due to the similarity of insulin to IGF (insulin-like growth factor), which is an important regulator of the ovaries, this results in disturbance of ovarian function. Therefore, PCOS-patients are recommended to take up micronutrients that contribute to normalisation of blood sugar levels and support insulin action. Well characterized are inositols, that play an important role in insulin signal transduction.
